Editorial: “Operation 37” and the Responsibility to Seek the Truth in the Age of Misinformation
India today stands at the crossroads of information and misinformation. With a single click, millions of messages reach our screens — some factual, many emotional. One such viral story now circulating on social media is called “Operation 37.” It claims that foreign powers — especially the United States and its intelligence agencies — are plotting to overthrow the elected government of India.
The narrative is dramatic, but completely unverified. No official agency, no credible international organization, and no reliable investigative report has confirmed the existence of such a plan. These claims originate primarily from partisan blogs, social media posts, and sensational videos — not from credible sources.
Such unverified stories cause double harm. First, they create fear, suspicion, and division among citizens. Second, they shift our democratic discourse from facts and reason toward imagination and conspiracy. True patriotism lies not in suspicion or hatred, but in awareness, unity, and restraint.
India remains one of the world’s strongest democracies — with its institutions, free press, judiciary, and active civil society safeguarding the nation’s fabric. If any foreign or domestic group ever attempts to destabilize this system, India has robust mechanisms for investigation and response. There is no need for panic — only vigilance and responsibility.
Every citizen has a duty to verify before forwarding. Rumors are not acts of nationalism; they are burdens of falsehood. The first rule of digital citizenship is simple — Think, verify, and then share.
India’s true strength lies in its unity, diversity, and discernment. The faster rumors spread, the calmer we must remain — for truth travels slower, but it endures longer.
